Beware the latest Internet scam

Internet scams targeted at attorneys show no signs of abating. The latest focuses on divorce settlements. A person from out of the country (lately the e-mails appear to be coming from Japan) asks a lawyer for help in obtaining the rest of a large divorce settlement. The writer even says she will discuss the possibility of an advance fee.

Typically, if a lawyer agrees, a very authentic-looking check from a well-known bank for the full amount is sent to the attorney, who is asked to cash the check, take out the legal fee and send the remainder to the client, usually by depositing the check directly into a foreign account.

The scams are getting increasingly sophisticated.
