State Bar begins general counsel search

The State Bar of California – which oversees admissions, discipline and regulation of California’s 253,000 lawyers – has kicked off a nationwide search for a new general counsel.

Reporting to the State Bar’s 19-member Board of Trustees, with a client relationship to the State Bar’s management, the general counsel is responsible for managing and directing the legal staff and legal work of the State Bar and providing legal advice, counsel and representation to the board and bar.

“We are seeking an outstanding lawyer and wise counselor with a track record of success at a large, complex, private or nonprofit/governmental enterprise,” said State Bar President Craig Holden.

The board’s search committee is co-chaired by Michael Colantuono and James Fox and includes Holden, Dennis Mangers, Joanna Mendoza, Danette Meyers and David Pasternak.

The search timeline calls for the new general counsel to be selected by late July. Deputy General Counsel Lawrence Yee has served as acting general counsel since the departure of Thomas Miller late last year.

The search is being led by CPS HR Consulting, a Sacramento-based executive search and consulting firm that specializes in the nonprofit and government sectors.

Those interested in the position should contact Stuart Satow at CPS HR Consulting by at 916-263-1401 or at resumes@cpshr.us. The deadline for applications is May 22.
